Zodiac Sign Cocktails: One Drink for Every Sign, Aries to Pisces
“Okay, but what would my sign drink?” A friend asked this over dinner last week. By dessert the whole table was assigning cocktails to each other, arguing over whether a Virgo would ever order anything with a straw.
So we finished the job. Below is one drink for each of the twelve signs, matched to the stereotype everyone loves to tease about. None of this is science. We just wanted an excuse to mix something new on a cool October night, and we’re right in the middle of Libra season, which feels like a sign in itself.
The whole zodiac at a glance
| Sign | Dates | Drink |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | Flaming Dr. Pepper |
| Taurus | Apr 20 – May 20 | Joyful Bull |
| Gemini | May 21 – Jun 20 | Gemini |
| Cancer | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | White Russian |
| Leo | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | Leo the Lion |
| Virgo | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | Aviation |
| Libra | Sep 23 – Oct 22 | Cuba Libra |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 – Nov 21 | Scorpion |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 – Dec 21 | Singapore Sling |
| Capricorn | Dec 22 – Jan 19 | Old Fashioned |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 – Feb 18 | Aquarius |
| Pisces | Feb 19 – Mar 20 | Aquarium |
Dates shift by a day in some years, so if you were born on a cusp, you get to pick. We’d take both drinks.
Fire signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Aries charges in first and asks questions later, so it gets a drink that is literally on fire. The Flaming Dr. Pepper floats lit 151 rum over amaretto, then drops the shot glass into a half glass of beer. It tastes oddly like the soda it’s named for. Blow it out before you drink it, every time, and keep long hair and paper napkins well back.
Leo wants a drink that’s named after them. Fair enough. Leo the Lion is brandy, dry vermouth and white crème de menthe, stirred and served up. The mint runs cool against the warm brandy. If your Leo needs even more attention, the Leo Special adds gin, Cointreau, lime and a swirl of Pernod.
Sagittarius is the traveler with a passport always half packed. The Singapore Sling’s recipe reads like a customs form: gin, Cherry Heering, Cointreau, Bénédictine, pineapple and lime, grenadine and bitters. It’s a long ingredient list, and the archer won’t mind one bit.
Earth signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Taurus loves comfort and won’t be rushed. The Joyful Bull is coffee with tequila, Tia Maria and Kahlúa, finished with whipped cream. We’d sip it slowly in a big mug, which is how Taurus does everything anyway.
Virgo measures twice. The Aviation is gin, maraschino liqueur, lemon juice and a little sugar, and it punishes a heavy pour. A quarter ounce too much maraschino and it tastes like cherry cough drops. Virgo will nail it, then make it again to be sure.
Capricorn is the steady one who already owns good glassware. The Old Fashioned is bourbon, sugar, Angostura bitters and a splash of water. It has been made more or less this way for well over a century, and Capricorn respects a track record.
Air signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Gemini has two sides, so the Gemini cocktail mixes two kinds of grown-up with one playful note. Cognac and Grand Marnier on one side, Galliano and lemonade on the other. Sophisticated, then fizzy and sunny. Very on brand.
Libra is all about balance, and the Cuba Libra is the most balanced highball we know. Dark rum, Coca-Cola and fresh lime over ice. Nothing in it fights for the spotlight. Yes, it’s usually spelled Cuba Libre. Libra will forgive the pun because it’s charming.
Aquarius is the free-thinking oddball, and the Aquarius cocktail is a nice oddball too. Scotch with cherry brandy and cranberry juice sounds like a dare. The smoke and the tart fruit get along better than anyone at the table expects.
Water signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Cancer is the homebody who always has snacks ready. Our database holds a drink actually named Cancer, made with Everclear and two packets of Kool-Aid. We love our Cancer friends too much for that one. They get a White Russian instead, vodka and Kahlúa with cream poured over. Cozy, sweet, and ready when you get home.
Scorpio is intense, private and a little dangerous. Obviously, it gets the Scorpion. Light rum, brandy and overproof rum, softened with orange juice, lemon and orgeat. It tastes gentle and hits hard. Scorpio season starts October 23, so now’s a fine time to batch some.
Pisces drifts somewhere between dreams and the deep end. The Aquarium is vodka, blue curaçao, Cointreau and passion fruit juice, and it comes out the color of a fish tank. It tastes like a beach vacation you dreamed about once.
Making it a party
Ask everyone for their sign at the door and hand over the matching drink. It works best with a small menu, so we’d batch the Cuba Libras and Scorpions in pitchers and make the rest to order. When a sign’s bottle is missing, CocktailBuilder can suggest a stand-in from whatever is already open. If your crowd likes the silly-name side of this, our funny shot names list keeps the jokes going, and our Shrek-themed drinks prove a theme can carry a whole night.
