Whiskey Shots: 8 Shooters, Washington Apple to Duck Fart
Read this in: Español · Deutsch · Français · Italiano
Whiskey shots split into two schools. One dresses the whiskey up with fruit and cream until your beer-drinking friends order seconds. The other is whiskey plus more whiskey, for people who think a mixer is an apology.
Both schools are represented below. Choose your congregation.
8 whiskey shots & shooters
Washington Apple
Crown Royal, sour apple schnapps, and cranberry juice. Crisp, tart, and the single most requested whiskey shooter of the last two decades. See recipe
Pro tip: Shake it with ice until the tin frosts. This one’s only right served cold.
Royal Flush
Crown Royal, peach schnapps, cranberry, and a little Chambord. The Washington Apple’s fancier cousin, smooth enough to be dangerous. See recipe
Duck Fart
Amaretto, Irish cream, and Tennessee whiskey, layered in that order. An Alaskan bar invention with a terrible name and a devoted following. See recipe
Three Wise Men
Johnnie Walker, Jim Beam, and Jack Daniel’s, sharing one glass. Scotch, bourbon, and Tennessee whiskey walk into a shot; nobody walks out. See recipe
Irish Car Bomb
Baileys and Jameson dropped into Guinness and finished fast, before the cream curdles. A bomb shot, technically, but too much of a whiskey institution to leave out. See recipe
Snakebite

Canadian whisky and lime juice. Two ingredients, no sweetener, all edge. See recipe
Red Snapper
Crown Royal, amaretto, and cranberry juice. Sweet-tart with an almond finish, and much friendlier than its cousin the Snakebite. See recipe
Boilermaker

A shot of whiskey and a beer. Drop it in or sip them side by side; either way it’s the oldest pairing in the American bar. See recipe
Four more for the second round
Crown Royal shows up again because Canadian whisky takes to schnapps and juice better than anything else on the shelf. There’s a whole Crown Royal shots roundup if that’s your bottle.
Jackcafe
Kahlúa in a shot glass with Jack Daniel’s floated on top. Coffee first, then the whiskey lands. Two bottles, ten seconds. See recipe
Pro tip: Pour the Jack slowly over a spoon. Kahlúa is heavy enough to hold the layer if you don’t rush it.
Royal Peach
Crown Royal and peach schnapps, half an ounce each, shaken cold. The Royal Flush with the juice and Chambord stripped out, which makes it sweeter and faster. See recipe
Gentleman’s Sour Apple Kiss
Gentleman Jack, apple schnapps, and a half ounce of sour mix, shaken and strained with a slice of green apple. The Tennessee answer to the Washington Apple, and drier. See recipe
Dirty Irish Whiskey
Baileys and Jameson in equal parts, shaken over ice and strained. The Irish Car Bomb without the Guinness or the clock. See recipe
Pro tip: Shake, don’t stir. The ice thins the Baileys enough that it stops coating the glass.
If you’re missing a bottle
- No Crown Royal. Canadian Club or Black Velvet. Both are blended Canadian whiskies that stay out of the schnapps’ way.
- No sour apple schnapps. Apple Pucker is the same thing under a DeKuyper label. Failing that, apple vodka plus a squeeze of lemon.
- No Chambord. Any black raspberry liqueur in the Royal Flush, or a quarter ounce of raspberry schnapps.
- No Jack Daniel’s. Any bourbon in the Duck Fart, Three Wise Men, or Jackcafe. Tennessee whiskey meets every bourbon rule plus a charcoal filter; Jack just won’t use the word.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the smoothest whiskey for shots?
Canadian whisky and Irish whiskey are the usual picks. Crown Royal and Jameson are both light-bodied and low-burn, which is why they anchor so many shooter recipes.
What is a Washington Apple made of?
Crown Royal, sour apple schnapps, and cranberry juice, shaken cold. It tastes like a tart green apple with a whiskey backbone.
What’s in a Three Wise Men shot?
Johnnie Walker, Jim Beam, and Jack Daniel’s in equal parts. The name comes from the three whiskey “Johns” on the labels. It’s strong, and it’s meant to be.
Do you sip or shoot a Boilermaker?
Both are legal. Traditionalists drop the shot into the beer and drink it down; the gentler route is sipping the whiskey with the beer as a chaser.
How do you layer a Duck Fart?
Amaretto first, then Irish cream, then the whiskey on top, each poured over the back of a spoon. Amaretto is the heaviest of the three, so the order isn’t optional. Layering technique is covered in full in our layered shots guide.
Can you batch Washington Apples for a party?
Yes. Mix equal parts Crown Royal, sour apple schnapps, and cranberry in a bottle and refrigerate for up to a day. Shake each pour with ice before serving, or store the bottle in the freezer and skip the shaker.
Whiskey earns its keep in a shot glass, whether it’s hiding behind apple and cranberry or standing there undiluted, daring you. Pour whichever suits the table, and browse more shots and shooters when someone calls the next round.
