What to Mix With Vodka: The 12 Best Mixers, Ranked
Read this in: Español · Deutsch · Français · Italiano
Vodka’s whole personality is not having one, which is why “what mixes with vodka” has the longest answer of any spirit: nearly everything. That’s not helpful when you’re standing at the fridge, so here’s the list ranked, each entry with the drink it unlocks.
-
Ginger beer. Vodka, ginger beer, squeeze of lime, copper mug optional: the Moscow Mule, probably the best-loved vodka highball of the century so far. 1:2 to 1:3.
-
Cranberry juice. The Cape Codder on its own; add grapefruit for a Sea Breeze or pineapple for a Madras. Shake it with triple sec and lime and it’s a Cosmopolitan. Cranberry is vodka’s most versatile juice partner.
-
Soda water + lime. The vodka soda: zero flavor argument, lowest calories on the list, impossible to get wrong.
-
Orange juice. The Screwdriver. Two ingredients, five seconds, and better than you remember if you use decent OJ.
-
Tomato juice. The Bloody Mary is the most customizable drink in existence; we wrote up the perfect version if you want a blueprint.
-
Grapefruit juice. The Greyhound. Rim the glass with salt and it becomes a Salty Dog. Bitter, fresh, underrated.
-
Lemonade. Summer default. Spike it 1:3 and add mint, or go frozen. Top it with a splash of Sprite and it’s a Dirty Lemonade.
-
Coffee liqueur. Instant White Russian with cream, Espresso Martini with espresso. Skip both and it’s a Black Russian, one of the most-rated drinks in our database.
-
Tonic. Drier than soda water, with that quinine snap. Better with a lot of lime. The Vodka Tonic is 1:2.
-
Iced tea. Works sweetened or not, and scales up to a pitcher without complaint.
-
Lemon-lime soda. Sweet, easy, party-proof.
-
Energy drinks. Legal, popular, and we’d gently point you at the ginger beer instead. If you insist, the Vodka Monster is the standard pour, and we’ve been through the whole category.
Vermouth didn’t make the list only because a vodka Martini is less “mixer” and more “cocktail with a resume.” (If yours taste flat at home, your vermouth is probably dead.)
Three that just missed the twelve
Pineapple juice. Sweeter than the juices above, which is why it’s usually cut with cranberry: the Bay Breeze is vodka, pineapple, and cranberry in a 3:2:2 pour.
Apple juice. Underused. A shot of vodka, a shot of apple juice, and a dash of cinnamon is the Apple Pie Shot. Trade the juice for sour apple schnapps and it’s an Appletini, which is exactly as sweet as its reputation.
Fresh lime and a splash of triple sec. Not a mixer you’d pour tall, but it’s the base of the Kamikaze, the most-rated vodka shot in our database. Swap lime for lemon and sugar and it’s a Lemon Drop. More of these in our vodka shots roundup.
Ratios that work
The pours bartenders land on without thinking, in ounces, for a standard highball.
| Mixer | Vodka : mixer | Pour | Drink |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ginger beer | 1:2 | 2 oz : 4 oz, half a lime | Moscow Mule |
| Cranberry | 1:2 | 1½ oz : 3 oz | Cape Codder |
| Soda water | 1:2 | 2 oz : 4 oz, ½ oz lime | Vodka Soda |
| Orange juice | 1:3 | 1½ oz : 4 oz | Screwdriver |
| Tomato juice | 1:2 | 1½ oz : 3 oz, plus seasoning | Bloody Mary |
| Grapefruit | 2:3 | 2 oz : 3 oz | Greyhound |
| Lemonade | 1:2 | 4 oz : 8 oz, splash of Sprite | Dirty Lemonade |
| Coffee liqueur | 3:2 | 1½ oz : 1 oz | Black Russian |
| Tonic | 1:2 | 2 oz : 4 oz | Vodka Tonic |
| Pineapple + cranberry | 3:2:2 | 1½ oz : 1 oz : 1 oz | Bay Breeze |
| Energy drink | 1:2 | 4 oz : 8 oz | Vodka Monster |
The pattern: 1:2 for anything carbonated, 1:3 when the mixer is a sweet juice that needs to carry the drink, and closer to even when the mixer is itself alcoholic. If a drink tastes like nothing, the fix is more lime before it’s more vodka.
The rare misses
Nothing is wrong with vodka, that’s the pitch, but a few pairings are worth skipping.
- Milk on its own. Grim. Vodka needs the coffee liqueur in between to make dairy work, which is why the White Russian exists and the “vodka and milk” does not.
- Red wine. A headache with extra steps. The tannin fights the alcohol burn and neither wins.
- Hot coffee. The heat drives off the vodka’s alcohol aroma and leaves a bitter, boozy cup. Cold coffee is a different story; that’s an Espresso Martini.
If a mixer tastes good by itself, vodka won’t ruin it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best mixer for vodka?
Ginger beer, which with lime makes the Moscow Mule. Cranberry juice is the most versatile juice option, soda water with lime is the cleanest low-calorie choice, and orange juice makes the classic Screwdriver.
What’s the healthiest mixer for vodka?
Soda water with fresh lime or lemon: zero sugar, zero calories beyond the spirit. Fresh grapefruit juice is the best-tasting middle ground.
What mixes with vodka from a normal fridge?
Almost anything: orange juice, cranberry, lemonade, iced tea, cola, tonic. That flexibility is why vodka remains the default party bottle. A 1:3 spirit-to-mixer pour works for all of them.
Should vodka be cold for mixed drinks?
It helps more than you’d think. Cold vodka is smoother and blends cleaner. The freezer is the classic storage spot, and we’ve covered whether that’s wise (short answer: for mixing vodka, yes).
What are the classic three-ingredient vodka drinks?
The Moscow Mule, Sea Breeze, Madras, White Russian, and Cosmopolitan all run on three ingredients. We keep a list of easy three-ingredient vodka cocktails for exactly this question.
What is the right ratio of vodka to mixer?
One part vodka to two parts mixer for anything carbonated, and one to three for sweet juices like orange or cranberry. In ounces that is 2 oz of vodka in a highball topped with 4 to 6 oz of mixer over ice.
Twelve mixers is a start, not a ceiling. We’ve run the same ranking for pickier spirits — whiskey, rum, and tequila all have stronger opinions than vodka does. The vodka ingredient page goes much further, and Cocktail Builder narrows it to your actual shelf: tell it what you own, it tells you what to pour.
