Malibu is the bottle that comes home from vacation and then sits there, waiting for you to remember you’re not on a beach. Good news: at 21% alcohol and heavily coconut-sweet, few bottles in the store mix easier. It doesn’t fight anything. Your job is just to pick a partner that either doubles down on the tropical thing or cuts the sweetness with some acid.

The best mixers for Malibu

Pineapple juice is the answer if you only want one. Coconut plus pineapple is the piña colada equation, and a 1:2 pour of Malibu to pineapple juice over ice gets you most of the way there with zero effort. Stretched to 1:4 in a collins glass it’s the Malibu Barbie, which is the same drink for a longer afternoon.

Cranberry juice is the move when pineapple feels too sweet. The tartness bites back, and the color is great. This is the base of the Malibu Bay Breeze, which splits the difference with both juices.

Orange juice works the way it works with everything, though it’s better with a splash of grenadine sinking through it. That’s the Malibu Sunset.

Cola surprises people. Coconut and cola is a beach-shack classic in half the Caribbean, 1:3, lots of ice, lime wedge non-negotiable. The Malibu and Coke on our site pours it 1:1, which is a party ratio, not a porch ratio.

Lemon-lime soda or ginger ale keeps it light and fizzy when juice feels heavy. The 7 Coconuts is 3 oz of Malibu under a can of 7-Up.

Club soda + lime is the low-sugar route. Malibu carries enough sweetness that soda water just stretches it into something almost sessionable.

Iced tea, lemonade, and mango or guava nectar round out the list. Sweet tea plus Malibu tastes like the porch swing moved to Key West; the site’s Iced Tea and Malibu runs 1:3 with Lipton. Mango is the Acapulcos Malibu, 2 oz Malibu to 3 oz mango juice over ice, and pink lemonade makes the Malibu Barbie #2.

Three mixers people miss

Root beer. Coconut and sassafras have no business together and yet the Mug Shot, 2 oz Malibu in 10 oz of root beer, tastes like a Mounds bar fell into a float. Frosted mug if you have one.

Hot chocolate. The winter exit for a summer bottle. The Almond Kiss is a single ounce of Malibu in a mug of cocoa with whipped cream on top, and it’s been rated by more people on our site than most of the juice drinks above.

Red Bull. The Bone Fish Shot, chilled Malibu strained over a third of a can, is the one everyone under 25 already knows. Strictly it belongs with the rest of the coconut rum shots, but it’s a mixer.

Ratios that work

Malibu is 21% alcohol, so 1:2 lands around 7% in the glass, a strong beer, and 1:3 is closer to 5%. Everything below assumes a highball full of ice.

When you’re ready for a real recipe

The Piña Colada is the obvious destination; our recipe post walks through the blender version. The Malibu Woo Woo is an ounce each of vodka and Malibu under 4 to 6 oz of cranberry, a Cape Codder with a tan. The Blue Hawaiian adds blue curaçao for a drink that looks like a swimming pool, and the Malibu Twist is the one nobody orders and everybody finishes first. More ideas live on our coconut rum ingredient page, the master index for the bottle.

The skip list

Dairy-heavy mixers (the coconut is creamy enough already), anything coffee-flavored, and dry red wine. If it wouldn’t be sold at a swim-up bar, think twice.

Two more to leave alone. Tonic: quinine’s bitterness and coconut sugar cancel into something that tastes like sunscreen. Whisky: oak and coconut don’t get along, and the coconut is the one that ends up tasting cheap. And go easy on stacking sugar. Malibu plus pineapple plus 7-Up plus grenadine is a legitimate recipe, but it’s dessert, and one is the limit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Malibu good with just Coke?

Yes, genuinely. A 1:3 Malibu and Coke over ice with a lime wedge tastes like a Cuba Libre that went on holiday. Few two-ingredient pours are as underrated.

What juice goes best with Malibu?

Pineapple, then cranberry, then orange. Pineapple leans into the tropical profile, while cranberry’s tartness balances Malibu’s sugar the best of the three.

How strong is Malibu?

Only 21% ABV, roughly half the strength of standard rum. That’s why Malibu drinks taste so mild: a 1:2 pour with juice lands around the strength of a glass of wine.

Can you drink Malibu straight?

Over ice, sure, it’s pleasant enough, like drinking a chilled coconut candy. Most people find it too sweet neat, which is why it’s built for mixing.

Is Malibu and pineapple juice a piña colada?

Close, not quite. A piña colada is white rum, pineapple juice, and cream of coconut, blended with ice. Malibu and pineapple over ice gets you the flavor without a blender or a can of Coco Lopez to open, and at 21% instead of 40% rum it’s a gentler drink.

What can you mix with Malibu if you have no juice?

Cola, lemon-lime soda, ginger ale, iced tea, root beer, or plain soda water with a lime wedge. All of them work at 1:3 over ice. Red Bull works too if that’s the direction the night is going.
