What to Mix With Jameson: Ginger Ale, Cola, Red Bull and the Rest

What to mix with Jameson, from a bartender: ginger ale and lime, cola, Red Bull, a lemon sour and Irish coffee, with ratios and a note on the flavored bottles.

St. Patrick’s Day, my second year behind the stick. We went through eleven bottles of Jameson before nine o’clock. I didn’t pour a single one neat. Every glass got something added, ginger ale mostly, some cola, and Red Bull for a few lunatics by the jukebox.

That night taught me what works with this whiskey and what doesn’t.

What you’re working with

Jameson is a light Irish blend, triple distilled with no peat, made in Midleton in County Cork. You get vanilla, some pear or green apple, a soft grainy sweetness and a little spice at the end. No smoke, no big oak.

So don’t bury it. A mixer that’s loud, like grape soda or a sour mix from a gun, wipes it out completely. You might as well pour vodka. The mixers that suit Jameson bring out the spice and the fruit. Ginger. Citrus. Coffee. Cola if you keep the pour honest.

Here’s the cheat sheet. Ratios are mine, not gospel.

Ginger ale, the house pour

If you only buy one mixer, buy this one. Jameson pushes it hard themselves and they’re right to.

The Irish Highball is Jameson, Canada Dry and ice. That’s it. Fill a tall glass with ice, pour two ounces of whiskey and top with ginger ale. Squeeze a fat lime wedge and drop it in. Don’t stir like you’re mixing paint, because one lift with the spoon keeps the bubbles.

The lime is not optional. Without it the drink is sweet and flat. With it the ginger snaps and the whiskey’s spice shows up.

Canada Dry is mild, which is fine. If you want more bite, use a spicier ginger beer and you’ve basically made a mule with whiskey. I liked that better. Customers liked the ginger ale, and customers paid.

For a party tray, go green. The Emerald Cocktail #4 splits the build with Midori. Sweeter and melon-forward, and it looks great under bar lights. There’s a whole post on drinks with ginger ale if you’ve got a case of the stuff.

Cola

Jameson and Coke is fine but not great. Cola has more sugar and more flavor than ginger ale, so the whiskey sits further back. Keep the pour at two ounces and you’ll still taste it.

The Jenna Pop! uses Pepsi and drops a cherry in. Tastes like a cherry cola somebody spiked. I’m not above it. The Ballchain Blaster swaps in Dr Pepper. Weird pick, but it works, because the cherry and vanilla in Dr Pepper match the vanilla in the whiskey.

Root beer goes the same way. Mountain Dew Code Red, the base of the Irish Redhead, does not. I made it once on request. Once.

Jameson and Red Bull

I’ll be straight. This is a club drink that people order at midnight because they want to stay out till two.

The Irish Energy is the whole recipe, Jameson and Red Bull over ice. An ounce and a half in a highball, one small can poured on top. The Irish Monster does it with Monster, which is a bigger can and a lot more sugar. Taste-wise, Red Bull’s sweet-tart thing actually covers whiskey better than you’d expect. It reads like a fruity sour.

Here’s the part I’d tell you across the bar. The caffeine makes you feel less drunk than you are. You aren’t less drunk. One of these is plenty, and two is where I’d start switching you to water. We’ve got more on mixing energy drinks in drinks with Red Bull.

Lemon

Jameson makes a soft whiskey sour with less punch than bourbon. Some people prefer that.

The McWhiskey Sour is a lazy-good version. Shake two ounces of Jameson with an ounce of lemon juice and a heaping spoon of powdered sugar. Strain over ice and top with a splash of Sprite to lighten it up. No egg white, no fuss.

Brunch crowd? The Maggie Girl muddles fresh mint with simple syrup, adds Jameson and gets topped with soda. Basically a whiskey mojito without the lime. Use fresh mint, because brown mint ruins it.

Lemonade works too. Half lemonade, half iced tea, a shot of Jameson. That’s a porch drink, not a recipe. If your fridge has something weirder, plug it into CocktailBuilder along with the Jameson and see what comes back.

Coffee

Irish coffee was invented for Irish whiskey. Jameson is the default in most bars I worked.

The Irish Coffee - Isle Style is the classic shape. Strong hot coffee, a spoon of sugar, an ounce and a half of Jameson, heavy cream floated on top. Warm the glass first with hot water. Whip the cream just until it pours thick, then pour it over the back of a spoon. If it sinks, you overwhipped it or underwhipped it. Try again. Nobody gets it right the first time.

The sweet-tooth crowd got Toby’s Special, with Kahlua and a pile of whipped cream. Or Xanthor’s Pants, coffee with Jameson and Baileys. Dumb name, good drink at 7 a.m. on a ski trip.

Not a coffee mixer, but Jameson and amaretto also sits with this crowd. The Irish Catholic is just those two. Nutty, sweet, a nightcap.

Orange, Cold Brew and Black Barrel

Jameson sells flavored bottles now, and Orange and Cold Brew are the ones people ask about. We don’t have tested recipes for either in our database yet, so no links. Here’s what I’d do.

Jameson Orange is sweeter than the regular bottle. It goes with soda water and an orange slice, or with ginger ale. Skip cola. Orange and cola fight.

Jameson Cold Brew already tastes of coffee. Pour it over ice with milk or cream and you’ve got a boozy iced coffee. That’s all it needs.

Black Barrel is not flavored. It’s a richer Jameson with more wood and vanilla, and I’d sip it. If you want to mix it, the Summer in Siam pairs it with rhubarb bitters and Granny Smith apple. Fresh and tart, a spring drink.

Stuff people asked me

What’s the best thing to mix with Jameson? Ginger ale and a squeeze of lime, hands down.

Is Jameson good with Coke? Good enough. Keep the pour small or you’ll taste only cola.

Does the bourbon advice apply? Partly. Bourbon can take heavier mixers because it brings more oak and more corn sweetness. The rundown on what to mix with whiskey covers the other bottles.

What about plain soda water? Two ounces, lots of ice, top with soda. If you actually like the taste of Jameson, that’s the one I’d pour you. It’s what I drank after close.
