What to Mix With Fireball: 11 Mixers That Tame the Cinnamon
Fireball is cinnamon first, whisky second, and subtlety never. That makes mixing it simpler than mixing real whiskey: you’re not protecting delicate barrel notes, you’re pairing with a flavor that behaves like the red-hot candy it’s imitating. Cinnamon loves apples, cream, vanilla, and ginger. Build from there and you can’t miss.
Apple everything
Apple cider is the undisputed champion. Cold and still in summer, hot with a cinnamon stick in October, 1:3 either way. Cinnamon and apple is pie logic, and it never gets old.
Hard apple cider does the same job with bubbles and an extra kick. An ounce and a half of Fireball under 4 ounces of cold cider is the Spiced Apple Cider on our books; when the cider is Angry Orchard, bars call it an Angry Ball. Apple juice is the year-round pantry version; push the ratio a bit sweeter and it drinks like the Apple Pie Shot in tall form. If apple’s your lane, our hard cider cocktails post goes deeper.
Apple juice and spiced rum, splitting the spirit, is the Ming Tran: an ounce each of Fireball and Captain Morgan, 2 to 4 ounces of cold apple juice, a pinch of cinnamon on top. The rum’s vanilla rounds off the cinnamon edge and the whole thing lands somewhere near a cold slice of pie.
Cream and vanilla
Cream soda plus Fireball tastes uncannily like cinnamon toast. Vanilla ice cream with a shot poured over it is a five-second dessert. And RumChata is the famous one: Fireball layered with the horchata liqueur is the Cinnamon Toast Crunch shot, which tastes so much like the cereal it’s unsettling. (More on that bottle in what to mix with RumChata.)
Fizz and heat
Ginger beer matches spice with spice. Think of it as a Moscow Mule that swapped its passport. Ginger ale is the gentler version. Cola works the way cinnamon Coke floats always worked. Orange soda, weirdly, has a cult following with Fireball; try it before you judge. The Sunset is the version on file, Fireball over ice with orange soda to the top.
Hot chocolate and coffee hold down the winter shift. A shot of Fireball in cocoa with whipped cream is the ski-lodge move.
Tart and sticky
Cranberry juice is the Thanksgiving pour nobody thinks of until the bottle is already out. The First Degree Burn on our site is an ounce of Fireball in 8 ounces of cranberry, which is barely a drink; 1:4 is where it starts to taste like one. The tartness cuts the sugar in the whisky better than any soda does.
Maple syrup, for a shot rather than a highball. The Dirty Steve is an ounce and a half of Fireball with half an ounce of maple syrup on top, taken in one. Use real maple; pancake syrup is corn syrup with a flavor packet and it tastes like it next to the cinnamon.
Grenadine and 151 is the other shot worth knowing. The Atomic Fireball layers grenadine, then Fireball, then a quarter ounce of 151 on top, and it tastes like the jawbreaker it’s named after. Don’t light it.
More of the shooter side lives in fall shots and candy shots, where Fireball turns up more than any other bottle.

At 1:3, every tall drink on that table lands around 8 percent alcohol, the strength of a strong beer, which is the whole reason Fireball highballs sneak up on people. They taste like soda and land like beer.
What to skip
Citrus juice (cinnamon and lime is medicine), milk in tall pours (fine in a shot, odd in a glass), and anything herbal like tonic. Also skip mixing it with better whiskey. Fireball flattens whatever you pour it into. Same goes for doubling the cinnamon: Goldschläger or Hot Damn on top of Fireball adds heat and nothing else. Diet sodas turn the whole thing into cough syrup.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the best mixer for Fireball?
Apple cider. The cinnamon-apple pairing works hot or cold, and a 1:3 pour is the easiest crowd-pleaser Fireball makes. Cream soda is the best non-apple option.
Is Fireball good with Coke?
Yes. It drinks like a spiced cherry cola. Keep it around 1:3 over plenty of ice. Ginger ale and ginger beer are livelier with the cinnamon, if you’re choosing.
What is Fireball and hard cider called?
An Angry Ball when the cider is Angry Orchard, or a Spiced Apple Cider on our recipe page. Pour an ounce and a half of Fireball into a glass and top with 4 ounces of cold hard cider.
Is Fireball good with cranberry juice?
Yes, and it is the natural Thanksgiving pour. Start at 1 part Fireball to 4 parts cranberry over ice; the tartness of the juice cuts the sugar in the whisky.
How strong is Fireball?
33% ABV, noticeably under standard whiskey’s 40%. Between that and the sugar, Fireball drinks land softer than they taste like they should.
What is Fireball and RumChata called?
The Cinnamon Toast Crunch shot: RumChata’s cinnamon-cream plus Fireball’s heat equals the cereal, uncannily. Equal parts, layered or shaken.
Does Fireball go bad?
No. At 33 percent alcohol an opened bottle keeps for years at room temperature. The cinnamon aroma fades a little after a couple of years open, and that is the only change you will notice.
