Vodka Shots: 8 Easy Shooters, Kamikaze to Chocolate Cake

Check the ingredient list of almost any famous shooter and vodka is sitting there quietly near the top. It has no flavor agenda of its own, so whatever you mix it with does the talking: lime, coffee liqueur, apple juice, hazelnut.

Pro tip: Shake longer than feels reasonable. The sugar has to dissolve in cold liquid, and a lazy ten-second shake leaves grit at the bottom of the glass.

Melon Ball

Grape Crush

Vodka, sweet and sour mix, and Chambord, stirred with ice and strained. Tastes like the purple soda, minus the fizz and with a lot more consequence. See recipe

Pro tip: Bottled sweet and sour is fine here. Fresh lemon and simple syrup is technically better, but the entire point of this drink is that it tastes like candy.

Pineapple Bomb

Pro tip: Plain vodka works if you don’t own the pineapple flavor. Bump the juice to half the glass to make up the difference.

If you’re missing a bottle

Most of these forgive a swap. The Kamikaze is the exception: bottled lime juice in a three-ingredient shot tastes like the bottle it came from, so make the Mind Eraser instead.

• No triple sec: Cointreau or any orange liqueur pours straight in. Blue curaçao works too and gets you the Blue Kamikaze for free.
• No Chambord: Raspberry schnapps or crème de cassis covers the Purple Hooter, Silk Panties, and Grape Crush. Cassis is drier, so add a bar spoon of simple syrup.
• No Frangelico: Amaretto in the Chocolate Cake. You get marzipan instead of hazelnut, and the sugared lemon still does its job.
