Thanksgiving Shots: Small Pours for a Day That Runs Nine Hours

Thanksgiving Shots: Small Pours for a Day That Runs Nine Hours

Thanksgiving is a marathon, and shots are the wrong format for a marathon unless you pick them carefully. Seventeen that suit the day, arranged by the hour you pour them.

Thanksgiving is a long day. People arrive at noon, eat at four, and are still in the kitchen at ten. Whatever you pour has to survive that arc, and most shots are designed for the opposite — a quick, loud round at the start of a short night.

So we have been choosy here. Everything below either suits a specific moment in the day, or is gentle enough to repeat across it. We have flagged which is which, because getting that wrong is how a family dinner goes sideways before the turkey comes out.

Before anyone eats

The early round is the one people remember, and it should be the lightest thing you pour all day.

Ziemes Martini Apfelsaft is vermouth and apple juice. Barely a shot at all, honestly — low proof, clean, and it reads as an aperitif rather than a party trick. This is the one we hand to people still in their coats.

Quick Puck is sour apple schnapps and a splash of something sporting. Tart, bright, and it wakes the palate up rather than coating it.

Waffles and Syrup — butterscotch liqueur and spiced rum, two ingredients — is the one that gets requested again later.

The apple and cider register

Apple is the Thanksgiving flavor that nobody argues with, and it has the useful property of tasting like the season without tasting like dessert.

Apple Pie Punch combines apple juice, cinnamon and fresh cider with a high-proof spirit. Make it as a batch in the morning, chill it, and pour small measures all afternoon — it is the single most practical recipe on this page for a crowd.

Dew It runs lemon vodka and sour apple schnapps over citrus soda. Fizzy and forgiving.

Popeye puts apple juice against Hpnotiq and melon liqueur for something considerably brighter than the rest of the list, which is welcome around the point where everyone has eaten too much.

Butterscotch and caramel

This is where Thanksgiving shots earn their keep, because butterscotch does the work that pie does without anyone needing another plate.

ShotBuildWhen
Long Tall CowboyButterscotch schnapps, Irish cream, cold milkAnytime — gentlest here

Jedi Mind Trick #2Butterscotch, Irish cream, KahlúaAfter dinner
Slippery VirginVodka, butterscotch, FrangelicoLate
Slippery NutcrackerVanilla vodka, butterscotch, Frangelico, amarettoLate, and go slow

Long Tall Cowboy is the one we make most. Cold milk rather than cream keeps it from sitting heavily, which matters enormously on a day when everyone has already eaten a pound of stuffing.

The cranberry ones

Cranberry is the one Thanksgiving flavor that is actually on the table, and it is underused in a shot glass — the acidity does something apple cannot, which is cut through a plate of gravy.

Whoo Whoo is vodka, peach schnapps and cranberry, equal-ish parts. A Woo Woo in miniature, and the most reliable crowd shot on this page.

Liquid Cheese Cake is vanilla vodka and cranberry juice, one to one. It tastes more like the dessert than it has any right to, and it is the shot to pour when someone says they don’t want anything sweet and then eats two slices of pie.

Beaver Tail is two parts Canadian whisky to one part maple syrup. Not cranberry at all, but it is the only maple shot we index and it belongs on this day more than most things here do. Stir it properly or the syrup sits at the bottom.

The dessert-course ones

French Toast #3 is cinnamon, butterscotch schnapps, Tennessee whiskey and whipped cream. It genuinely tastes like the thing, and it is a lovely thing to hand round while the pie is being cut.

Buttered Brandy layers brandy, bourbon, butterscotch and coffee liqueur — the heaviest pour here and the right one for people settling in.

Butterbeer #2 is root beer and butterscotch-vanilla liqueur, which the younger adults at the table will ask about by name.

Flaming Giraffe — butterscotch, overproof rum, Kahlúa — is the one we mention and then usually do not make. Know your table.

What we have learned hosting this

Batch the early round. Pouring individual shots for fourteen people while a turkey needs basting is a mistake you make once. Apple Pie Punch scales; everything in the butterscotch table does not.

Keep the dairy cold and late. Irish cream shots served warm are unpleasant, and they curdle if they sit next to anything acidic. Ours stay in the fridge until the plates are cleared.

One strong pour, clearly signposted. Guests pace themselves if they know which is which. Announcing that Slippery Nutcracker is the heavy one is both more hospitable and more effective than quietly making it weaker.

The day, by the hour

The single most useful thing we can give you is not another recipe, it is an order.

WhenWhatWhy
Arrivals, ~12pmZiemes Martini Apfelsaft, Quick PuckLow proof, palate-opening, nobody is committed yet
Kitchen hours, 1–3pmApple Pie Punch, batchedPours itself while you cook
Just before the mealNothingLet people arrive at dinner sober enough to taste it
After the plates clearLong Tall Cowboy, Whoo WhooDairy and cranberry, both cold
With the pie, ~7pmFrench Toast #3, Liquid Cheese CakeThey taste like the course they arrive with
Late, for whoever is leftButtered Brandy, Slippery NutcrackerHeavy, slow, clearly announced

The row that matters most is the empty one. A round poured twenty minutes before the meal is the one that ruins the meal.

Frequently asked questions

What shots are good for Thanksgiving?

Apple, butterscotch and cranberry builds suit the day best — apple and cranberry early because they are bright and low-proof, butterscotch and cream after the plates clear because they read as dessert. Avoid anything loud or high-proof before the meal.

How do you make shots for a big group?

Batch them. Apple Pie Punch mixes in the morning, chills all day and pours into small glasses without any further work. Layered and dairy shots have to be made individually, so keep those for after dinner when you are not also cooking.

What is a good Thanksgiving shot that is not too sweet?

Ziemes Martini Apfelsaft — vermouth and apple juice — is the driest thing on this page. Quick Puck is tart rather than sweet, and Beaver Tail is whisky-forward with just enough maple to register.

When should you serve shots on Thanksgiving?

On arrival and after the plates are cleared, and not in the twenty minutes before the meal. Thanksgiving runs nine or ten hours, so the risk is front-loading, not running out.
