Tequila Rose Drinks: Pink Shots, Strawberry Milkshakes and the Coke Float

Tequila Rose Drinks: Pink Shots, Strawberry Milkshakes and the Coke Float

Tequila Rose drinks that work: easy pink shots, a Pink Russian with vodka, strawberry milkshakes, a hot chocolate, and what happens when you add Sprite.

Sorority formal, 2009. Forty girls, one bartender, me. Every third order was “something pink.” I had a bottle of Tequila Rose in the well and a jug of milk under the bar. By eleven the bottle was gone and I was a hero.

That’s what this stuff is for. Nobody buys it to sip thoughtfully. You buy it because it’s pink, it tastes like strawberry milk, and a table of people will drink it happily all night.

Pink, sweet, and about 15%

Tequila Rose is a strawberry cream liqueur with a little tequila in it. Low proof, around 15%. The tequila is barely there. Don’t expect agave. Expect strawberry ice cream with a warm finish.

Two things follow. It’s sweet, so it needs something to cut it or something to match it. And it’s a cream liqueur, so acid and heat can wreck it. More on that below.

Serve it cold. Always. Warm Tequila Rose tastes like melted candy.

Shots

This is where most bottles go. Half-ounce pours, mostly equal parts. Chill everything first.

  • Coke Float. An ounce of Tequila Rose in a shot glass, splash of Coke, stir, shoot. Tastes like a strawberry soda fountain. My favorite on this list.
  • Neopolitan #2. Tequila Rose, Baileys, Kahlúa, a third of an ounce each, stirred with ice and strained. Strawberry, vanilla, chocolate. The name gives it away.
  • Peppermint Rose. Equal ounces of peppermint schnapps and Tequila Rose. Candy cane. Good in December.
  • Cinnamon Rose is the same build with cinnamon schnapps instead. Half the room loves it.
  • Southern Rose: Southern Comfort and Tequila Rose, half and half. Goes down way too easy.
  • T-52. Kahlúa, Grand Marnier, Tequila Rose. The B-52’s pink cousin. Layer it if you have the patience.

If you want it to actually taste like tequila, the Thorny Mexican is equal parts Tequila Rose and gold tequila. Rougher. Fun at a bachelorette. For a whole tray of these, we keep a longer list of pink shots, and the creamy shots page covers which mixers make cream curdle in the glass.

With vodka

Vodka makes it stronger without changing the flavor much. That’s the whole point.

The Pink Russian is the one I made the most. Shot of Kahlúa, half shot of vodka, shot of Tequila Rose, milk to the top, over ice. It’s a White Russian in a pink dress. Sweeter, too. The card says shake it right in the glass, so cap it with a tin and go.

The Muddy Rose goes bigger. Baileys, vodka, Tequila Rose and Kahlúa, an ounce each, splash of half-and-half, flash blended. Rich. One per person.

Party trick I stole from a coworker: pour the Pink Russians into a pitcher without the ice, keep the pitcher in the fridge, and pour over fresh ice as people show up. Milk holds fine for a few hours cold. Doesn’t hold in the sun. Don’t leave it on the patio table.

For shots, the MVP’s Strawberry Bomb stacks vodka with chilled Tequila Rose and strawberry schnapps. The Mandi Candy is just raspberry vodka and Tequila Rose, half and half. Tastes like a fruit chew.

Milkshakes and the tall stuff

Tequila Rose was born to go in milk. It’s already halfway there.

Carrie’s Pink Blossom is an ounce of Tequila Rose, an ounce of amaretto, two ounces of milk, over ice. Strawberry almond. Easiest drink in this post.

Teresa’s Dream Shake shakes Kahlúa, Tequila Rose, milk and ice and pours it into a frosted beer mug. Chocolate-covered strawberry in a glass.

Got a blender? Riley’s Rosarita blends Tequila Rose and gold tequila with vanilla ice cream, half-and-half, ice and a quarter ounce of Rose’s lime. Pour it into a hurricane glass, whipped cream, a strawberry on the rim. Summer drink. I’d make it in October too.

Odd one. The Beer Rose is three ounces of root beer and three of Tequila Rose over ice. Sounds wrong. It’s a strawberry cream soda. Root beer’s vanilla does the work.

Cold night? Hot Neopolitan. An ounce of Tequila Rose and an ounce of vanilla rum into a mug of hot chocolate. Add the liqueur once the cocoa is off the boil, not while it’s simmering. Boiled cream liqueur gets grainy.

Stuff people ask me

Can you mix Tequila Rose with Sprite? Yes, but drink it fast. Soda is acidic, and acid plus cream liqueur means curdling if it sits. Coke is no safer, by the way. That’s why the Coke Float is a shot and not a highball. Pour the Tequila Rose cold, top with cold Sprite, drink it. Don’t nurse it.

Does it need to go in the fridge? After opening, yes. It’s a cream liqueur at low proof. Same logic as Baileys, which we broke down in does Baileys need refrigeration. Smells sour or pours lumpy, toss it.

What else goes with it? Chocolate, vanilla, coffee, mint, cinnamon. Anything you’d put on a sundae. Go easy on citrus juice. A squeeze is fine. An ounce of lemon is cottage cheese.

That sorority bottle, by the way? I stocked two for the next formal. Both sat in the cooler untouched. Different crowd. Read the room before you buy.
