Sweet Drinks to Order at a Bar, and Exactly How to Ask for Them

Sweet drinks to order at a bar that any bartender can make: vodka, rum and tequila picks, sweet shots, what to say, and what to skip at a dive bar.

Friday night, people ten deep at the rail, and a guy waves a twenty at me. He wants something sweet. That’s it. No spirit, no hint. I had maybe four seconds per customer on nights like that. So he got an Amaretto Sour, because it’s fast and nobody hates it. He came back for three more.

Something sweet is a fine instinct and a terrible order. Bartenders can’t read minds. Give us a drink name or a base spirit and you’ll get a better drink, faster.

How to order a sweet drink

Say the drink name if you know it. Every bartender in America knows the drinks below. If you don’t know a name, use this formula: spirit + mixer + “make it sweet.” “Vodka and pineapple, sweet” works, and so does “rum with something fruity.” “Surprise me” doesn’t. On a busy night, surprise me gets you a vodka cranberry.

Two more tips. Name the spirit brand only if you actually care about it. And if a drink is too strong, ask for it “long” or “in a tall glass,” which means more mixer. Most of us will do that without charging you extra.

Strictly speaking, a Fuzzy Navel is just peach schnapps and orange juice. Our version adds vodka, which makes it stronger. Ask for it “no vodka” if you want it soft.

By spirit

With vodka. Lemon Drop if you like tart candy. Sex on the Beach if you like juice. White Russian if you want dessert. Vodka hides best, so it’s the easy pick for a nervous first order.

With rum. Malibu Bay Breeze, every time. It’s coconut rum with two juices, it costs the bar nothing to make, and I’ve never seen one sent back. Piña Colada if the place has a blender that works.

With tequila. Order a Tequila Sunrise. It’s sweet orange with a red bottom and very little tequila bite. A Margarita can be sweet too, but you have to ask. Say “sweet, not sour” and we’ll add syrup.

First time at a bar. Go Woo Woo or Fuzzy Navel. Both are low on burn, high on fruit and impossible to mess up. I poured hundreds of them for twenty-first birthdays and never heard one complaint.

Sweet shots to order

Shots are where people panic. Don’t. These four are known in every bar I’ve worked.

  1. Lemon Drop shot. Citrus vodka, then you bite a sugared lemon wedge. That’s the exact build of our Lemon Drop #2, and it tastes like lemonade.
  2. Washington Apple. Crown Royal, sour apple schnapps and cranberry in equal parts. Our Washington Apple recipe pours two ounces of each, enough for a round. Sour candy with whisky warmth.
  3. Green Tea shot. Irish whiskey, peach schnapps, sour mix and a splash of Sprite. There’s no tea in it. It tastes like peach iced tea.
  4. Baby Guinness. Kahlua with a little Baileys floated on top, so it looks like a tiny pint. The Baby Guinness tastes like coffee candy.

What to skip at a dive bar

Dive bars are great. They’re just not built for fussy drinks, so keep it simple there.

Skip anything blended. Half the time the blender’s broken, and the other half you just made a bartender hate you. Skip Cosmos unless you see a real lime. Bottled lime juice makes them taste like cleaning product. Skip anything with egg white. And skip ordering by a cocktail menu you saw on Instagram.

Watch out for the Long Island Iced Tea too. It tastes like sweet tea. It isn’t. It’s four spirits plus triple sec in one glass. I’ve watched it flatten people who “only had two.” If you want sweet and easy, it’s the wrong call. Our piece on drinks that don’t taste like alcohol explains why the sweet ones sneak up on you.

Dive-safe order, always: Malibu and pineapple. Every dive has both, and I’ve never seen anyone disappointed.

Practice at home first

Not sure what you like? Make a couple at home before you go out. Plug the bottles in your cabinet into CocktailBuilder’s recipe matcher and it shows which of these you can already pour. Then you’ll walk up to the bar with a name ready.

Tip well on the first round. A dollar or two extra on a sweet drink buys you a heavier hand with the grenadine all night.
