Mountain Dew Cocktails: Why It Beats Cola as a Mixer

Mountain Dew Cocktails: Why It Beats Cola as a Mixer

Mountain Dew has citric acid where other sodas have phosphoric. That one difference is why it mixes better than cola does.

People laugh when you say Mountain Dew is a good mixer. Then they try one.

It is a better mixer than cola and I will die on that hill. There is an actual reason and it is not complicated.

The acid thing

Cola gets its bite from phosphoric acid. Mountain Dew gets its bite from citric acid.

That is the whole story. Citric acid is the acid in lemons and limes. It is what every sour cocktail on earth is built on. So when you pour Dew into a spirit, you are effectively adding citrus and sugar at the same time — which is the exact structure of a sour.

Phosphoric acid does nothing like that. It is sharp but it tastes of nothing. That is why rum and coke is fine and rum and Dew is better than it should be.

Dew also carries orange juice concentrate in the formula, which is where the citrus flavor comes from, and it is the only major soda that does.

Whiskey and Dew

Best category. Bourbon’s vanilla and the citrus go together the way bourbon and lemon do in a sour.

Spearmint Lifesaver is Jack Daniel’s and Mountain Dew. Two ingredients. Tastes nothing like spearmint and the name has never been explained to me.

Depressed Goalie splits the soda between Pepsi and Dew with Jim Beam over it. Splitting the sodas is smarter than it sounds — the cola brings body, the Dew brings the acid.

Neon-Geek adds cinnamon schnapps to bourbon and Dew, which is the best thing on this page if you like cinnamon at all.

Vodka and Dew

The obvious one, and the one people actually drink.

Dog House Dew is vodka, lemon juice and Mountain Dew. The added lemon doubles down on the citric acid already there and it fixes the sweetness problem completely. This is the recipe to start with.

Booger’s Booze is high-proof vodka and Dew, and it is exactly as subtle as the name suggests.

Frog Nuts brings pineapple juice and vodka. Pineapple and citrus is a good pairing and the Dew disappears into it.

Mr. P uses cherry juice and cherry syrup with vodka. Cherry cola territory, but brighter.

Rum and Dew

Dew the Dancin Captain is spiced rum, root beer and Mountain Dew. Three-way, and the root beer’s sassafras against the citrus is genuinely unusual.

Red Headed Stepchild #2 uses Code Red and light rum. Code Red is cherry-forward, which changes the drink more than you would expect.

The liqueur ones

Jager and Dew is Jägermeister and Mountain Dew. Sounds terrible. Is not. The herbal bitterness needs acid and sugar, and Dew supplies both at once.

B.O.N.U.S. is Southern Comfort and Dew. Peach and citrus, straightforward, works.

Hot Damn Dew is cinnamon schnapps and Dew.

Fluxuation Cocktail throws blue curaçao and banana schnapps at it. The blue on yellow makes a green that is hard to look at directly.

Black and Blue Buck uses Pitch Black with Jägermeister, and Kentucky Bullfrog mixes vodka, Kool-Aid and the lime version.

Before you pour

Add citrus anyway. Even though Dew already brings citric acid, a squeeze of fresh lime lifts every drink on this list. The acid in the can is flavorless on its own — the aroma comes from the concentrate, and there is not much of it. Fresh juice brings what the can cannot.

Do not use diet. The sweeteners in Diet Dew behave differently against alcohol and the aftertaste is much more noticeable once there is a spirit in the glass. If you want it less sweet, use less soda and more ice.

Start with Dog House Dew. If that one does not convert you, nothing here will.

The neighbouring mixers: drinks with Sprite, drinks with 7Up and drinks with Coke cover the rest of the fridge, and energy drink cocktails covers the caffeinated end. Builds at CocktailBuilder.
