Mind Eraser Drink: The Recipe, the Straw Trick, and Five Variations

The Mind Eraser is a Black Russian with bubbles and a straw. Three ingredients. Kahlúa, vodka, club soda. What makes it a Mind Eraser instead of a highball is how you drink it. Fast, all at once, from the bottom up.

I made hundreds of these on college nights. It’s a shot that looks like a cocktail. Nobody sips it. If someone sips it, they ordered the wrong drink.

The build

Here’s the Mind Eraser the way I poured it.

1. Fill a rocks glass to the top with ice.
2. Pour in 1 oz Kahlúa.
3. Float 1 oz vodka over it. Pour slowly over the back of a bar spoon.
4. Top with 1 to 2 oz club soda, again slowly.
5. Drop a straw straight to the bottom. Don’t stir.

You get three bands. Dark coffee on the bottom, clear vodka in the middle, fizzy soda on top. It won’t stay perfect. Doesn’t need to. The layers are mostly there so the first thing up the straw is sweet coffee, and the last thing is soda to wash it down.

Kahlúa is 20% ABV in the US. Add an ounce of 80-proof vodka and the glass holds about one standard drink. It goes down in about five seconds. Pace yourself.

Where people wreck it

Stirring it. Now it’s a tall, flat, watery Black Russian. Fine drink. Not this one.

Sipping it. Same problem, slower. The ice melts, the soda goes flat, the layers blur. Drink it in one go or order something else.

Too much soda. The soda is a chaser, not a mixer. Two ounces, tops. Fill the glass with soda and you’ve drowned it.

Pouring the vodka fast. It punches straight through the Kahlúa and you lose the layers. Slow, over a spoon. The ice helps catch it too.

Small ice. Crushed or pellet ice melts before you get the straw in. Big cubes.

Questions that come up

How do you make a Mind Eraser?

Ice to the top of a rocks glass, 1 oz Kahlúa, 1 oz vodka floated on top, 1 to 2 oz club soda floated on that. Straw to the bottom. Drink it in one go without stirring.

Is a Mind Eraser a shot or a cocktail?

Both. It’s served in a rocks glass over ice, but it’s drunk like a shot. That’s why it shows up in our Kahlúa shooters list and not with the slow drinks.

Is there a purple Mind Eraser?

Not in our database. Any purple version would have to drop the Kahlúa, because nothing turns coffee liqueur purple. At that point it’s a different drink wearing the name.

The variations

Our database has five more recipes with the name. Some are close. One is from another planet.

The Mind Eraser #2 swaps the club soda for Sprite. That’s the “Mind Eraser with Sprite” people search for. Sweeter, softer, easier on a first-timer. Same build.

Mar’s Mind Eraser keeps the soda water and swaps plain vodka for Stoli Vanil. Vanilla and coffee. It tastes like an iced latte that bites back. This is the one I’d make at home.

The Mind Eraser #3 adds butterscotch schnapps and uses 7-Up. Kahlúa, vodka, butterscotch, lemon-lime soda. Dessert in a rocks glass. Layer the butterscotch between the Kahlúa and the vodka.

The Mansion Mind Eraser goes creamy. Kahlúa, Irish cream, rum, 7-Up. Keep the 7-Up short and cold. Lemon-lime soda is acidic, and too much of it can curdle the Irish cream. And then there’s the Mind Eraser #4. No Kahlúa at all. Vodka, lime juice, Midori and 151 rum. It’s green. It’s sour. It’s strong. It shares a name with the original and nothing else. Shake the vodka, Midori and lime with ice, strain into a rocks glass, and float a small splash of 151 on top. Then drink it slowly, because this one really will erase something.
