Goldschläger Drinks: What to Do With the Bottle With Gold In It
Read this in: Español · Deutsch
Somebody bought this bottle because of the gold. Nobody buys it twice.
It’s cinnamon schnapps at 43% ABV with edible gold leaf floating in it, and the gold is the entire marketing proposition. But it’s a genuinely useful bottle once you stop treating it as a novelty, and it appears in more of our recipes than most people would guess.
About the gold
It’s real gold. It’s also inert, tasteless, and passes straight through you. The old bar myth that the flakes cut your throat and get you drunk faster is nonsense — gold leaf is a few hundred nanometers thick and folds against anything it touches.
There’s maybe a dollar’s worth in a bottle. That’s not a scandal, it’s just how thin gold leaf is.
Where it earns its place
Cinnamon plus apple. That’s the pairing that does the work.
Cinnamon schnapps against apple schnapps, apple juice or cider gives you something that tastes like a pie and needs no other help. Most of the drinks below are variations on exactly that.
Hot Apple Pie #4 — pineapple juice, cinnamon schnapps, sour apple schnapps. Serve it warm in a mug. This is the one to make in October.
Black Cinnamon Apple — crème de cassis, cinnamon schnapps, melon liqueur. Darker, and the blackcurrant does something interesting against the cinnamon.
The whisky ones
Cinnamon and Canadian whisky is the second pairing worth knowing.
Breath Taker — Crown Royal, cinnamon schnapps. Two ingredients, equal parts, cold. It’s essentially a homemade Fireball and it’s better than the bought version because you control the ratio.
Hendershlager — Crown Royal, herbal liqueur, energy drink, cinnamon schnapps. Four things, all loud. Party drink, not a sipper.
The creamy ones
Smashing Pumpkin — coffee liqueur, Irish cream, cinnamon schnapps.
Layer it: coffee liqueur first, then Irish cream, cinnamon on top. Three clean bands. It’s the best-looking shot in this list and it’s seasonal in the right way for autumn.
Pour to order. The cinnamon schnapps won’t curdle the cream immediately but it’ll blur inside ten minutes.
Golden Almonds — almond liqueur, milk, cinnamon schnapps. Reads like horchata. Genuinely good and almost nobody makes it.
Iceberg — white crème de menthe, peppermint schnapps, cinnamon schnapps, milk. Mint and cinnamon at the same time, which shouldn’t work.
Mother’s Milk — butterscotch schnapps, milk, cinnamon schnapps. Sweet. One is enough.
The bright ones
For when the drink needs to look like something.
| Drink | Goes in | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Superman #2 | Grenadine, blue curaçao, cinnamon schnapps | Layered shot |
| Arkansas Avalanche | Grenadine, cinnamon schnapps, lemon-lime soda | Tall, over ice |
| The Golden Knight | Cinnamon schnapps, iced tea | Tall, over ice |
| Ocho Cinco | Herbal liqueur, cinnamon schnapps, lemon-lime soda | Tall, over ice |
| Emerald Jewel Funtini | Vodka, melon liqueur, cinnamon schnapps | Shaken, up |
The Golden Knight is the one I’d actually order. The tea’s tannin cuts the sugar in a way nothing else on this list manages, and it’s the only drink here you could have two of.
The Funtini needs to move fast — shake it and get it to the table while the flakes are still suspended, because once they settle you’re drinking a green martini and paying gold-leaf prices for it.
Making the gold do something
Shake, don’t stir. Stirring settles the flakes; shaking suspends them, and they’ll stay up for about a minute in a clear drink.
Serve anything with visible gold in clear glass and put a light behind it. In a rocks glass on a dark bar it’s invisible and you’ve wasted the only reason the bottle costs what it does.
For adjacent bottles, our butterscotch schnapps drinks covers the other big schnapps category, the Fireball shots roundup handles the cinnamon whisky end of the same shelf, and the builder will tell you what one bottle and no plan actually pairs with.
Shelf life
43% ABV means it’s stable indefinitely. It’ll never spoil and it barely fades — the cinnamon is an infused oil and it holds up far better than fruit schnapps does. A bottle from five years ago is fine.
The gold settles to the bottom over months. That’s gravity, not decay. Shake it.
Which is the useful thing about this bottle, in the end. It’s the one liqueur on a home shelf you can’t ruin by neglect, and given how most people buy it once and forget it, that’s probably the feature that matters.
