Funny Shot Names: 12 Real Shots With Ridiculous Names, and What's in Them

Gorilla Fart, Cement Mixer, Chunky Monkey, Exxon Valdez: twelve real shots with ridiculous names, what goes in each one, and where the name probably came from.

Friday, one in the morning. A guy leans over the bar and asks for a round of Gorilla Farts. Loud. His friends lose it. I pour it. Nobody at that table remembered what was in it. Everybody remembered ordering it.

That’s the whole appeal. Half the shots in the world are named to get a laugh when you say them out loud. Some of them are even good. Our database is full of them, and a few pull serious search traffic. The Liquid Cocaine and the Broken Down Golf Cart both got their own write-ups. Here are twelve more. Where I know why a shot got its name, I say so. Where I don’t, I guess, and I tell you it’s a guess.

The animal kingdom

Gorilla Fart

The Gorilla Fart is 151 rum and Wild Turkey 101. Two high-proof bottles. That’s it. My guess on the name: it’s big, it’s rude, and it clears the room. There’s a gentler version, Gorilla Fart #4, that’s just three regular whiskeys. Jack, Wild Turkey and Crown Royal. Still a lot of whiskey.

Duck Fart

A layered shot. Duck Fart #2 is coffee liqueur on the bottom, Irish cream in the middle, Crown Royal floating on top. Tastes like a B-52 that went to Canada. The story you usually hear puts its birth in an Anchorage bar. I can’t prove that. Nobody can.

Chunky Monkey

This one has cottage cheese in it. I’m serious. The Chunky Monkey is cottage cheese, chocolate syrup and coffee liqueur. The chunks are the joke. The monkey is probably borrowed from the ice cream flavor. That’s a guess. There’s no banana in it.

Smurf Fart

The Smurf Fart is blueberry schnapps, cream and blue curaçao. It’s very blue and a little cloudy. You can work out the rest.

The ones that do something weird in your mouth

Cement Mixer

Irish cream and lime juice. That’s the whole Cement Mixer. Here the name is no mystery. The acid in the lime curdles the cream while it’s in your mouth. You’re told to swish it around, and it thickens as you do. It’s a prank you pay for. I’ve seen grown men gag on it.

Slippery Nipple

The polite end of the list. Irish cream and peppermint schnapps in the version we have as the Slippery Nipple. Slides down easy, which is my guess for the “slippery” part. The rest of the name was chosen to make people blush while ordering it.

Buttery Nipple

Butterscotch schnapps under Irish cream. The Buttery Nipple is the sweetest thing on this list and the one I sold most. It tastes like a butterscotch candy. The name clearly riffs on the Slippery Nipple.

Named after something that has nothing to do with drinking

Exxon Valdez

Butterscotch schnapps and white sambuca. The Exxon Valdez is named after the 1989 Alaska oil spill. Why? My guess is that someone once made it with black sambuca and it looked like crude in a glass. With white sambuca it’s golden and tastes like licorice toffee.

Boot to the Head

Black sambuca and Jack Daniel’s. The Boot to the Head is almost certainly a nod to the old comedy sketch of the same name. It fits. Anise and whiskey together hit about that hard.

Surfer on Acid

The Surfer on Acid is Jägermeister, coconut rum and pineapple juice. It’s actually good. Herbal, tropical, weirdly balanced. The name is a guess on my part: coconut and pineapple for the surfer, Jäger for the part where things get strange.

The family tree

Hairy Navel

A Fuzzy Navel is peach schnapps and orange juice. Add vodka and it grows some hair. The Hairy Navel is vodka, peach schnapps and orange juice. That one is not a guess. It’s a pun.

Dirty Grandmother

Coffee liqueur, milk and Newfoundland Screech rum. The Dirty Grandmother is a relative of the Dirty Mother, which is brandy and coffee liqueur. Swap in rum, add milk, move up a generation. That’s how I read it, anyway.

How to order one without dying of embarrassment

You don’t. That’s the point. Say it loud, say it with a straight face, tip well. Most bartenders have heard worse by nine o’clock. If you want another good laugh without having to explain yourself, the Mind Eraser has a dramatic name and a respectable recipe. And the Baby Guinness is the one where the joke is how it looks, not what it’s called.
