Friends Themed Drinks: One Cocktail per Character, Plus Central Perk Coffee
I tended bar at a Friends trivia night once. Sixty people and one blender. A woman in a Central Perk T-shirt corrected me on the color of the couch before I’d poured a single drink. She was right.
They all wanted one thing. A drink named for their favorite character. I had nothing. So I poured a lot of vodka cranberry that night and called it whatever they wanted.
This is the menu I wish I’d had. It’s a fan menu, not an official one, and nobody connected to the show had a hand in it. Every drink is a real recipe from our database, picked because the name or the joke fits. One per character.
| Character | Drink | Why | Effort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rachel | Blushing Bride | The wedding dress in the first episode | Easy |
| Ross | Grounds for Separation | Three divorces | Hard |
| Monica | Icy Clean Martini | It’s clean. It’s exact. | Medium |
| Chandler | Awesome Chandler | It’s his name | Medium |
| Joey | Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich | Sandwich | Easy |
| Phoebe | Cat’s Meow | The cat song, and it’s strange | Easy |
The six on the couch
Rachel’s easy. She walks into a coffee shop in a wedding dress, so she gets a Blushing Bride. That’s an ounce of peach schnapps, an ounce of grenadine and four ounces of Champagne in a flute. Pink and sweet. It’s also a lot of grenadine for one flute, so I’d pull it back to half. Nobody will complain.
Everybody gives Ross a dinosaur. There’s a Green Dinosaur #3 in the database, half an ounce each of vodka, gin and Midori, and it’s a fine shot. Wrong drink, though. The man has been divorced three times. Grounds for Separation is two ounces of bourbon with half an ounce each of Aperol, Averna and sweet vermouth, plus a dash of bitters, stirred with no garnish. Brown and bitter and a little sad. “Grounds” works for the coffee shop too. It’s the hardest drink here, because you probably own neither the Aperol nor the Averna. Short on bottles? Pour the dinosaur.
Monica’s drink has rules, which is why I love it. The Icy Clean Martini wants three ounces of Skyy, an ounce of dry vermouth, four drops of orange bitters and a strip of lemon in the pitcher. Then forty stirs. The recipe says forty, and it says no garnish in capital letters. Count out loud. She would.
Chandler took no thought at all. Awesome Chandler has been sitting in our database for years, and I have no idea who it was named after. An ounce each of Absolut Mandrin and peach schnapps, a quarter ounce each of amaretto and Midori, and a splash of sour mix, with orange and cranberry juice to taste. Seven ingredients. Nobody at the party will be able to tell you what it is. Same goes for his job.
Joey gets the only drink on the menu that’s a sandwich. Cranberry juice, Frangelico and DeKuyper Razzmatazz, an ounce and a quarter each, stirred and strained. The hazelnut does a fair impression of the peanut butter and the raspberry does the jelly. Make one per person, because he doesn’t share.
Phoebe’s is the Cat’s Meow, one ounce of whiskey and a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the blender. That’s the entire recipe. Our own notes admit it sounds weird. It shouldn’t work, then you taste it and feel a little bad for doubting it. Small glass. Bring out a guitar if somebody owns one and has no shame.
Everybody else
The six get the headlines, but the real fans at my bar cared more about the side characters.
Gunther stands behind that counter for years with bleached hair and a broken heart. Ash Blonde, then. Three ounces of Lillet and an ounce of Cointreau with a splash of sweet vermouth. It’s pale and gentle and easy to overlook, which is the whole idea.
Marcel the capuchin gets a Brass Monkey, half an ounce each of rum and vodka in four ounces of orange juice. Easiest drink on the page. Mild enough that somebody will have three.
The chick and the duck come as a pair. Funky Chicken is a half shot of Wild Turkey with a half shot of Cuervo. Yes, that’s a turkey in a chicken. Duck Cocktail is an ounce and a half of rye with ginger ale and a little water, and I’d serve it to anybody.
Ugly Naked Guy never says a word and he still gets a drink. Skip and Go Naked is gin, sour mix and cold beer. I wrote up my pitcher years with it already.
Then the orange couch itself. There’s a shot called the Big Comfy Couch, a third of an ounce each of vodka, Razzmatazz, blue curaçao, amaretto and sour mix. Pour six. That’s your toast.
Central Perk coffee drinks
Use the biggest mugs you own. Soup bowls with handles, if you’ve got them. That’s half the joke. Here’s what goes in them with booze, starting with the one I’d push hardest:
- Irish Coffee. Irish whiskey, brown sugar and hot coffee with cold cream floated on top. Do not stir it.
- Boston Iced Coffee. An ounce each of brandy and white crème de cacao in six ounces of cold coffee. Batch it in a pitcher and walk away.
- Almond Mochaccino. Amaretto, Kahlúa and six ounces of cappuccino, blended with ice, cherry on top. It’s dessert.
- Kahlua Espresso Martini. Kahlúa, vodka and espresso, shaken hard. I’ve made thousands of these and I’m tired, but your guests aren’t.
Got a pot going cold at the end of the night? Our list of cocktails with leftover coffee has more.
Non alcoholic Friends drinks
Don’t make the sober guests drink tap water at your party.
The Cafe Au Lait is the star. Instant coffee in boiling water goes in one pitcher, hot foamed milk and light cream in the other. You fill each cup from both at once, with the streams meeting on the way down. It takes practice and it looks great. The recipe makes six servings. Six. I didn’t plan that.
For something cold, the Cappuccino Cooler blends coffee, chocolate ice cream and chocolate syrup under whipped cream. The Greek Iced Coffee is less sweet, just coffee, milk and two teaspoons of honey blended with ice. Use decaf after dark. If somebody wants no coffee at all, a Roy Rogers is ginger ale, lemon-lime soda and a teaspoon of grenadine.
How I’d actually run it
Don’t make all of this. You’ll hate your friends by nine o’clock.
Pick the easy ones: Blushing Bride, Brass Monkey, Boston Iced Coffee. Batch the last two and put the name cards out. Make Monica’s and Ross’s to order for the two people who’ll care, because they always exist. If a guest wants something you can’t make, type your shelf into Cocktail Builder and see what comes up.
The woman from trivia night came back the next year in the same T-shirt. She read my card top to bottom and told me Gunther’s drink was too nice for him. I left it on.
