Drinks With Hawaiian Punch: Party Bowls, Shots and What Liquor to Pour

Hawaiian Punch drinks that work: a big-batch party bowl, vodka, rum and Malibu mixes, Sprite highballs, the blue and green flavors, and a few easy shots.

A guy once walked up to my bar with a gallon jug of Hawaiian Punch. Unopened. Red. He wanted to know what we could do with it for his sister’s birthday upstairs.

Plenty, it turns out. I wrote a recipe on a bar napkin and sent him back upstairs with it and a bag of ice.

Hawaiian Punch gets no respect. It’s sweet. It’s mostly not juice. It started life in the 1930s as a syrup for ice cream. Doesn’t matter. At a party it’s cheap and already flavored, and it hides liquor better than anything else in the grocery aisle. That’s also the danger.

Start with the bowl

Most people asking about Hawaiian Punch drinks are making a punch bowl. So let’s do that first.

My house version. Makes about 30 cups.

  1. One gallon of Fruit Juicy Red, cold.
  2. One 750 ml bottle of vodka or white rum. Not both.
  3. One 2-liter of Sprite or 7-Up, added right before guests show.
  4. A can of pineapple chunks with the juice.
  5. A block of ice. Not cubes. Freeze water in a loaf pan the night before.

That lands a bit over 4% before the ice melts. Beer strength. People drink it like Kool-Aid anyway. Set out small cups, not pint glasses. I’ve watched what happens with pint glasses.

The block matters. Cubes melt in twenty minutes and you get pink water by nine o’clock. A block keeps it cold and dilutes slow.

Want the cooler version with every bottle in the house dumped in? That’s jungle juice. Our jungle juice recipe covers it. Grape drink and grain alcohol is a separate animal, the Purple Jesus punch.

Which liquor goes with Hawaiian Punch

Pretty much anything. Some pour better than others.

Vodka is the default. It adds nothing and takes nothing away. The Heaven on Earth is just vodka and Hawaiian Punch over ice. Two ounces of vodka, five of punch. That’s the drink. For something with a little more going on, the Palm Breeze adds peach schnapps and orange juice and uses the blue punch.

Coconut rum is my pick. Malibu and Hawaiian Punch taste like spring break in a plastic cup. The Heaven in Your Mouth is that pairing and nothing else. Add pineapple juice and you’ve got the Paradise in April. That one I’d actually serve in a tiki mug.

Bourbon sounds wrong. It isn’t. The Drop Kick mixes Jim Beam with Hawaiian Punch. The punch smooths the oak, the whiskey cuts the sugar. Tastes like a fruity whiskey sour if you squint.

Cognac works too. The Hawaiian Passion is Hennessy and punch. Fancy bottle, cheap mixer. I poured it for a wedding crowd once. Nobody complained.

Gin is the odd one. Juniper fights the fake fruit. If you want to try anyway, the Kid Curry cuts it with Squirt, and the citrus soda bridges the gap.

Everclear I’ll mention because someone always asks. The Hawaiian Clear is grain alcohol and punch. That’s how people end up on the floor. Make it, fine. Go light on the grain alcohol and put a sign on the bowl.

With Sprite

Best mixer pairing in this whole post. Sprite thins the syrup and adds bubbles. Tastes less like a lunchbox.

The Hawaiian Russian builds vodka, punch, Sprite and pineapple juice in a tall glass. Equal parts of the mixers. That’s my go-to when someone wants “something red and fizzy.” The Hawaiian Parrot swaps the vodka for Parrot Bay coconut rum. The Boredom Kills keeps it to vodka, Sprite and red punch. Dead simple. 7-Up works the same way if that’s what’s in the fridge.

Blue and green Hawaiian Punch

Yes, they’re real: Blue Berry Typhoon and Green Berry Rush. Kids love them. So do bachelorette parties, for the same reason.

You buy them for the color. Flavor’s close to the red with a different candy on top. Mix them the same way.

Green goes with green. The Ninja Turtle is green apple vodka, Green Berry Rush and lime. Neon and sour. The Hawaiian Hillbillie uses watermelon vodka with the green punch. Good for a Halloween table. Swamp water, basically.

Blue shows up in the Palm Breeze above, and in the Blue Heaven Bliss, which throws Cognac, vodka, coconut rum, pineapple and Red Bull into the blue punch. That’s a lot of drink. Don’t serve two.

Don’t mix red and blue in one bowl. You get brown. I learned that the hard way at a Fourth of July party where I was going for patriotic and got pond water.

Shots

Hawaiian Punch makes easy shots because it’s already sweet. You just need a liquor and a ratio.

The Orange Hawaiian is Bacardi orange rum and punch. Shake it cold, half and half, strain it. Tastes like a gummy bear. The Pearl Harbor #2 is Jägermeister, Red Bull and punch, a bomb-style shot for the late crowd.

For a tray, do it like any batched shot. One part liquor, one part punch, a little water, chill the pitcher, pour down the row. Or make Jell-O shots. Boil Hawaiian Punch instead of water and use vodka for the cold half.
