Drinks With Gatorade: Golf Course, Cooler and Tailgate Mixes
My uncle played every Saturday with three guys from his church. Same foursome for twenty years. One of them brought a cooler of blue Gatorade and a pint of vodka that never left his golf bag. By the back nine the scorecards got creative.
That’s where this drink comes from. Nobody invents it at a cocktail bar. It gets invented in a parking lot, a cart, a dorm. The bottle’s already in the cooler. The vodka’s already in the bag.
Fine. It works. Might as well get the ratios right.
One thing first
Gatorade does not stop a hangover. It doesn’t cancel out the alcohol either. Electrolytes in the glass don’t change how much you drank. People believe the opposite and drink more because of it. I’ve watched it happen on a 95-degree day at a tailgate.
And the sugar and salt hide the booze. A vodka Gatorade tastes like Gatorade. That’s the appeal and the trap. Pour it on the light side and keep a plain bottle of water going next to it.
Vodka and Gatorade
The base drink. One and a half ounces of vodka, six of Gatorade, lots of ice. That’s about 8% before the ice melts. Stronger than most beer, and it goes down faster.
Our database has a pile of versions. They’re mostly the same drink with a different color.
The Drunkin’ Gator is vodka and Gatorade. Any flavor. The Blue Brain Trasher names Smirnoff and Cool Blue. The Blue Bomb uses Riptide Rush. Same idea.
My pick is the Allen Oakdale. Vanilla vodka and lemon-lime Gatorade. Sounds odd. Tastes like lemon cream soda. Better than the plain one.
Flavor matters more than vodka brand here. Lemon-lime and orange are the most forgiving. Fruit punch is sweetest. Cool Blue is the one people actually ask for.
With Sprite
Everybody searches for the Gatorade, Sprite and vodka drink. It’s a good build. The soda adds fizz and thins the syrupy finish.
Here’s how I’d pour it on a hot day:
- 1½ oz vodka
- 3 oz Gatorade, lemon-lime or blue
- 2 oz Sprite
- Tall glass, packed with ice
Soda goes in last. Don’t stir hard or it goes flat.
The closest one in the database is the Smoochie Smoochie Blue. Blackberry schnapps instead of vodka, Sprite, Glacier Freeze. Its twin, the Smoochie Smoochie Red, swaps in fruit punch. Both are sweet. Lower proof than straight vodka, which is not a bad thing at noon.
Ginger ale is the other soda. The Flashback is ginger ale, Gatorade and vodka. If you play golf you know the Transfusion: vodka, grape juice, ginger ale, lime. Flashback is its cousin from the energy-drink cooler. For more on the lemon-lime side, see our drinks with Sprite roundup.
Golf drinks with Gatorade
On a course you want something you can pour into a cup with a lid. Two ingredients max. Nothing that needs a shaker.
I was skeptical of the GatorBeam until I tried it. Jim Beam and Gatorade. With orange Gatorade it drinks like a lazy whiskey sour. Keep the bourbon to an ounce, because you’ve still got to putt.
The most grown-up thing on this page is the Bitter Lime: Seagram’s lemon gin, lime juice and Gatorade. Tart. Not cloying. The Hpno-Ade is the opposite end, Hpnotiq and Glacier Freeze, two pale blues that look like pool water and taste like fruit candy.
For a foursome, make the Disco Lemonade by the pitcher at home. Fruit punch Gatorade, Smirnoff and pink lemonade. Best of the bunch for a group.
Pre-mix at home. Bottle it in a clean Gatorade bottle so nobody has to measure in a cart. Label it. Some courses don’t allow outside alcohol at all, so check before you show up with a cooler.
Which flavor with which bottle
Gatorade comes in more flavors than I can keep track of. Here’s how I’d match the common ones.
Lemon-lime goes with nearly everything. Vodka, gin, white rum, even tequila. Think of it as a flat, salty Sprite. Orange likes bourbon and vanilla vodka. Fruit punch wants coconut rum or plain vodka and nothing smarter. Cool Blue and Glacier Freeze pair with the blue liqueurs and with blueberry schnapps, as in the Blue Solute. Grape is the hard one. It tastes medicinal with most liquor. Save it for the kids’ cooler.
Zero-sugar Gatorade works in all of these. The drink gets thinner and a little salty. Add a squeeze of lime and nobody notices.
Tailgate cooler mixes
Tailgates are where the 151 and Everclear recipes live. There are lots of them in our data: the Fierce 151, the QB Sneak, the Everglade. I’m not going to pretend they’re good drinks. They’re high-proof liquor hidden in a sports drink. That’s how someone ends up sitting out the second half in the car.
If you want rum, take the Texas Apple Delight instead. Regular rum, Gatorade, apple juice. Easy to batch. Easy to drink slow.
The Liquid Skittles is the crowd-pleaser. Mango rum, cherry limeade, lemon-lime Gatorade. It’s candy. People love it.
For shots, we have a whole page of tailgate shot recipes. The Jagerade belongs there too. Jäger and chilled Gatorade, poured short.
Got something else in the cooler? Throw it into the CocktailBuilder ingredient search and see what comes back.
Batching for a cooler
For a 2-gallon drink cooler, which leaves room for the frozen bottles:
- one 750 ml bottle of vodka
- one gallon of Gatorade
- a 2-liter of Sprite, added on site
Comes out a bit under 5%. Light beer strength, which is where a daytime cooler belongs. Don’t add ice to the cooler itself. Freeze a few bottles of the Gatorade solid and drop them in. They chill it without watering it down.
My uncle’s buddy never measured anything. He also never broke 100. I’m not saying those are connected.
