Candy Shots: 7 Shooters That Taste Like the Candy Aisle
Read this in: Español · Deutsch
Bartenders have spent decades reverse-engineering the candy aisle with schnapps and liqueurs, and some of the results are eerily accurate. Hand someone a Tootsie Roll shot without telling them the name and watch them figure it out mid-swallow.
Seven of the best impressions. All of them actually deliver the thing on the label.
7 candy shots
Gummy Bear
Raspberry schnapps, vodka, and cranberry juice. Sweet, chewy-red flavor; the resemblance is uncanny. See recipe
Jolly Rancher
Melon liqueur, blueberry schnapps, grenadine, and sweet and sour mix, with a cherry. Green-apple-adjacent, hard-candy sweet. See recipe
Tootsie Roll
Dark crème de cacao, vodka, triple sec, and a splash of orange juice. Chocolate and orange was always the Tootsie Roll’s secret, and this nails it. See recipe
Bazooka Joe
Banana liqueur, Irish cream, and blue curaçao. Comes out a weird gray-blue and tastes like bubblegum. Don’t ask how; just try it. See recipe
Peanut Butter and Jelly
Hazelnut liqueur and black raspberry liqueur. The Frangelico stands in for peanut butter shockingly well. See recipe
Pro tip: Chill both bottles first. Room-temperature Frangelico pours heavy and muddies the jelly half.
Chocolate Cake
Hazelnut liqueur and vodka with a sugared lemon wedge to bite after. No chocolate in the glass, pure yellow cake on the palate. The lemon is not optional; it’s the trick. See recipe
Pineapple Upside-Down Cake
Vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, and a drop of grenadine sinking to the bottom like the cherry in the recipe. See recipe
Three more from the back of the aisle
Sour mix does a lot of the work in this group. If you’re out, the five-minute homemade version beats the bottled stuff. The creamier candy-bar shots (Peppermint Patty, Girl Scout Cookie) live over in dessert shots.
Sour Patch Kid

Vodka, blue curaçao, grenadine, sour mix, and the juice of a lime wedge, shaken hard. The lime sells it. Without it you have a blue drink; with it you get the sour-then-sweet sequence the candy is built on. See recipe
Pro tip: Grenadine and blue curaçao make purple. Pour the grenadine last if you’d rather it stay blue on top.
Swedish Fish
Blackberry schnapps and triple sec, then cranberry juice until it tastes right. The recipe says to stop adding cranberry when it tastes like the candy. That is the correct level of precision. See recipe
Grape Crush

Vodka, sour mix, and Chambord in equal thirds, stirred with ice and strained. Reads as grape soda with no grape in it; black raspberry and lemon do the impersonation. See recipe
If you’re missing a bottle
- No raspberry schnapps. Chambord or raspberry vodka in the Gummy Bear. Chambord is richer, so cut it to 3/4 oz.
- No blue curaçao. Triple sec plus a drop of blue food coloring. Curaçao is orange liqueur dyed blue; you lose nothing but the shortcut.
- No Frangelico. Any hazelnut liqueur. Amaretto turns the PB&J into almond butter and jelly, which is fine.
- No dark crème de cacao. White crème de cacao and a bar spoon of chocolate syrup. The Tootsie Roll needs the color as much as the flavor.
Frequently asked questions
What shot tastes most like actual candy?
The Gummy Bear and Tootsie Roll are the two that make people’s eyes go wide. The Chocolate Cake is the best party trick, since the flavor only appears when you bite the lemon.
How does the Chocolate Cake shot work?
Hazelnut liqueur and vodka, followed immediately by a bite of sugared lemon. The combination of hazelnut, sugar, and citrus tricks the palate into reading “cake.” Without the lemon it’s just a hazelnut shot.
What bottles do I need for candy shots?
Raspberry or blueberry schnapps, banana liqueur, crème de cacao, Frangelico, and a curaçao cover this whole list. None will hurt your wallet, and they keep.
Are candy shots strong?
Middling. Liqueurs run 15 to 30% ABV versus 40% for straight spirits, but most of these still pack a real punch behind the sugar. Treat them like shots, not dessert.
What’s the difference between schnapps and liqueur?
In the US, nothing much. American schnapps is a sweetened, flavored liqueur, usually 15 to 25% ABV, which is what every recipe here means. European schnaps is unsweetened fruit brandy at 40%, and would ruin a Gummy Bear.
Can you make candy shots ahead of time?
The clear ones, yes. Batch the Gummy Bear, Jolly Rancher, Grape Crush, or Sour Patch Kid in a bottle and refrigerate for up to a day. Anything with Irish cream (the Bazooka Joe) gets built when you pour it.
Nostalgia is a hell of a mixer. Line up a Gummy Bear, a Tootsie Roll, and a Bazooka Joe and watch the table argue about which one’s closest. Then keep going: the shots and shooters library runs deep.
