Blue Shots: The One Bottle Behind Every Blue Drink You Have Ordered
Every blue drink you have ever been handed came out of the same bottle. Blue curaçao. There is no second option.
That is worth saying because people order a blue shot expecting a flavor. Blue is not a flavor. Blue curaçao is orange liqueur with dye in it. Same base as triple sec, roughly. The color is the entire product difference.
Once you know that, the whole category makes sense. Blue shots are orange shots that photograph well.
The two-ingredient ones
Start here. These are the ones I actually poured on a busy night.
Cyclone Attack is lemon juice and blue curaçao. That is it. The lemon makes the orange read as orange instead of as candy, and it is sharper than anything else on this page.
Ice Bear is vodka, soda water, blue curaçao. Long enough to sip, weak enough to survive.
Kursk swaps the soda for energy drink. Do with that what you will.
The layered and creamy ones
Blue over cream is visually loud and structurally simple, because curaçao is denser than most dairy.
Blue Squid — light rum, white crème de cacao, cream, blue curaçao. Pour slow over a bar spoon and it stacks.
Born on the 4th of July does blue curaçao, sloe gin and cream, which gives you red, white and blue in one glass if you pour it right. It is a Fourth of July drink that nobody makes in September, and that is a shame.
Blue plus a clear spirit
The workhorses.
Blue Kamikaze is vodka, lime, blue curaçao, ice. It is the single most-ordered blue shot in the world and it deserves that. The lime is not optional. Without it you have sweet dye.
Polar Bear #2 is vodka, blue curaçao and 7Up. Lighter. Fizzier. Goes down too easily.
Electric Jam adds sour mix to that same idea and it is the better version if you have sour mix on hand.
Blue plus coconut
Coconut rum and blue curaçao is the most common blue pairing there is. The coconut fattens up a thin liqueur.
Blue Coconut — coconut rum, blue curaçao, 7Up.
Mi General is Malibu, blue curaçao, Sprite. Near-identical, and both are better cold enough to hurt.
Blue Dream thickens it with piña colada mix.
Blue plus green
Melon liqueur and blue curaçao make a color that does not occur in nature.
Listerine Shot is lime, melon liqueur, blue curaçao. Named honestly. It genuinely looks like mouthwash and it genuinely tastes fine.
Blue Freezie is the same three in different proportions, frozen.
The two odd ones
Davey Crockett puts peach schnapps and orange juice against the blue. Peach and orange are close cousins, so this one tastes more coherent than it looks.
Midnight Cocktail uses apricot brandy and lemon. Stone fruit against orange peel. It is the most grown-up drink on this list by a wide margin.
Where these fall apart
Too much curaçao and it stops being blue. Past about an ounce in a small glass the color goes past blue into ink, and under bar lighting ink reads as black. Less is more literal here than anywhere else.
No acid and it is undrinkable. Every good recipe above has lemon, lime, sour mix or soda in it. The ones without acid are the ones people abandon half-finished.
Buy one bottle of curaçao. You will not need a second.
The blue curaçao mixer guide covers what else it goes with, and if the format matters more than the colour, try the layered shots roundup or the vodka shots roundup. Every recipe above lives on CocktailBuilder.
