Bacardi Limon Drinks: What to Mix It With, Real Recipes and Shelf Life
Second shelf, left of the Absolut Citron. That’s where Bacardi Limon lived in every college bar I worked. I could grab it with my eyes shut. Thursday nights I probably did.
It’s white rum with lemon flavor. You don’t sip it. In years of pouring it, nobody ever asked me for a neat Limon, and I’d have worried about them if they had. It’s a mixing rum. One job. It does that job well.
The job is this: it brings its own lemon. Pour it into anything sweet and fizzy and the citrus is already handled. No wedge, no squeeze, no sour mix. On a slammed Friday that’s worth a lot.
What it won’t do is taste like rum. If you want molasses, funk, barrel, get a different bottle. Limon is closer to a citrus vodka on spring break.
The two-bottle drinks
These were most of my Limon pours. Highball glass, packed with ice. An ounce and a half of Limon. Mixer to the top. That’s the bar standard and I still make them that way at home.
| Order | Recipe in the database | What it tastes like |
|---|---|---|
| Limon and Sprite | Limon Spritzer | Lemon on lemon-lime. Clean. The default. |
| Limon and Coke | Citrus Coke | Rum and Coke with a lemon in it already |
| Limon and lemonade | Cape Breton Lemonade | Porch drink. Sweet. Dangerous in July. |
| Limon and ginger ale | Limon and Ginger | Softer. My pick when the soda gun had Canada Dry. |
| Limon and Mountain Dew | LimonDew | Neon. Exactly what you think. |
| Limon and iced tea | B.L.T. | A lazy Arnold Palmer with rum |
Limon and Sprite was the order. Hands down. People said “Limon Sprite” like it was one word. The database files it under several names, Limon Squeeze and Beautiful Disaster among them. Same two bottles every time. I go one part Limon to three parts soda. Less soda and the sweetness piles up.
Limon and Coke works better than it should. Add a splash of Rose’s lime and it’s the Cuba Gooding Jr. Great name. Decent drink.
Lemonade, more lemon
Lemon on lemon sounds dumb. It isn’t. Bacardi-ade is lemonade, a little fresh lemon juice and Limon. The real juice pulls it back from candy toward something you’d actually want a second of. Bacardi Pink swaps in Minute Maid pink lemonade. Same drink, pinker. It outsold the yellow one every summer I worked.
Want it shaken? Lemon Drop #7 is only lemonade and Limon. Shake it hard with ice, strain it into a sugared shot glass and you’ve got a rum lemon drop. More in our lemon drop shots roundup.
Cranberry
Bar rule: if it’s clear and it’s on the rail, someone will order it with cranberry. Pink Limon is Limon, cranberry and sweet and sour. Tart, pink, easy. The Fat Cat Cooler drops the sour mix and tops Limon and cranberry with Sprite. Taller, fizzier, better for a long night.
Red Bull and beer
I poured a mountain of Bazooka Bull. Limon and a can of Red Bull. Named for the bubble gum, and yeah, that’s the flavor. These went down fast. Too fast. Count yours.
Then there’s the spring break move. Drink a couple inches out of a cold Corona, pour in a shot of Limon, thumb over the top, tip it once. The Limona Corona is that drink. So are Beer ’n Limon and the Buccaneer. Three names, one trick. Beats a lime wedge, I’ll give it that.
A few with more going on
Green and sweet: the Crocodile. Midori, Limon, Sprite. Melon candy over ice.
Blue: El Caribe (Caribbean Martini). Limon with Cointreau and blue curaçao, shaken and strained. It looks like a swimming pool and tastes like an orange-lemon martini.
New Year’s: Lemon Celebration. Limon and Chambord in a flute, Champagne on top. Raspberry and lemon. Nice.
The candy one: Gumdrop Martini. Vodka, Limon, Southern Comfort, lemon juice and a little dry vermouth. Named right. I’ve only made it on request.
The big one: Long Island Iced Tea - Premium. Absolut Citron, Tanqueray, Cuervo Citrico, Cointreau, Limon and a splash of Coke. Six bottles. I made exactly one of these for a guy who wanted “the most expensive Long Island you can do.” He tipped well and left early.
The 151 crowd always wanted Limon in the mix too. If that’s your scene, our Bacardi 151 drinks page covers the drinks where both bottles show up. When I’m trying to use up a half bottle, I just punch what’s left on the shelf into CocktailBuilder and see what it finds. There are over a hundred recipes with Limon in there, a lot of them wild.
Does Bacardi Limon expire?
People ask me this more than you’d think. Short answer: no. It’s a distilled spirit, bottled strong enough that nothing grows in it. Sealed, it’ll keep for years.
Opened is different. The lemon is the part that fades, not the rum. A year in, the bottle’s fine. A few years on a sunny shelf with a loose cap and it’s rum with a faint memory of citrus. Not dangerous. Just flat. Keep the cap tight and keep it out of the window. If it smells off or the color has gone strange, pour it out and buy another. It’s not an expensive bottle.

What I’d actually make
Limon and ginger ale with a squeeze of fresh lemon. Tall glass. Lots of ice. It’s the one I still order when I spot the bottle on a back bar.
