Apple

Thin apple slices fanned across the rim of a cocktail glass — that’s a garnish that does real work, adding aroma and a crisp bite between sips. Fresh apple works beautifully muddled with bourbon and cinnamon syrup for a fall old fashioned. Granny Smiths bring tartness, Honeycrisps bring sweetness, and Fujis split the difference. Apple juice and apple cider are the more common cocktail forms, but nothing beats a fresh slice floating in a glass of calvados and tonic. Hit sliced apples with a little lemon juice to keep them from browning.
