2 Ingredient Shots: Easy Two-Bottle Shooters With Vodka, Rum, Tequila and Malibu
Two bottles. That’s the whole shopping list for every shot on this page. No fruit to cut, no syrup you made last Tuesday.
I worked a college bar for four years. On a Thursday, half the shot orders were two ingredients, whether the customer knew it or not. Fast to pour and hard to wreck, as long as you measure. Most are a half ounce of each, so a standard shot glass holds one with room to spare. Eyeball the pour and one side swamps the other, so use a jigger.
Got two random bottles and no idea if they belong together? Type them into Cocktail Builder and it lists what they make. Everything below is a real recipe from that database, sorted by the bottle doing the heavy lifting.
Vodka
Vodka with Sprite gets searched more than anything else here. It’s also the laziest shot ever invented. The Kurant Shot is 2 cl of Absolut Kurant filled up with Sprite. Blackcurrant vodka plus lemon-lime soda. Pour the soda last or it foams over the rim.
Plain vodka needs a partner with some personality:
- Black Magic Shooter: an ounce of vodka, half an ounce of coffee liqueur. A Black Russian with no ice and no patience.
- Banana Split Shooter: equal ounces of banana liqueur and vodka. Very sweet, so chill both bottles.
- Headshot: if you’ve got a bottle of Passoa gathering dust, pour an ounce with an ounce of Smirnoff.
- Chocolate Cake Shot: Frangelico and vanilla vodka, half an ounce each. Hazelnut and vanilla somehow read as cake.
Keep the vodka in the freezer. Warm vodka in a shot glass is a punishment. Our vodka shots list has plenty more if this is your bottle.
Rum
Rum takes Sprite too. The Boom Boom Shot is half an ounce of Bacardi Limon and half an ounce of Sprite. Citrus on citrus. A tiny highball you finish in one gulp.
Spiced rum loves sweet stuff. The Maple Syrup Shot is Captain Morgan and butterscotch schnapps, half and half. There’s no maple in it. Vanilla in the rum plus butterscotch fakes it well enough. I poured a lot of these every November.
The M&M’s Shot is an ounce of Captain Morgan with an ounce of Mountain Dew. Don’t ask me about the name. Nobody behind the bar knew either.
Want something darker? The Pine-Sol Shooter is three-quarters of an ounce each of dark rum and Frangelico. Nobody wants to order something named after floor cleaner. Order it anyway. It’s nutty and warm.
Malibu
Easiest two-ingredient base there is. It’s sweeter and weaker than real rum, and coconut gets along with nearly anything you pour beside it.
Bailey-Bu is an ounce each of Baileys and Malibu. Coconut cream pie in a glass. Fuzzy Palms is Malibu and peach schnapps at half an ounce each. I batched these by the pitcher for pool parties. Apple Ashley swaps in sour apple pucker at three-quarters of an ounce each. Tart enough that people order a second one to figure out what it was.
Then there’s Jager and Malibu, an ounce of each. I know how that sounds. But coconut sands the medicinal edge off Jägermeister and leaves something like spiced licorice candy. My regulars who swore they hated Jäger drank these all night.
Tequila
The popper is the classic. Half tequila, half lemon-lime soda. Cover the glass with your palm, slam it on the bar and drink it while it’s still fizzing. Our Popper uses 7-Up. The Tequila Bang Bang uses Sprite. Same drink, different logo. Get thick-bottomed shot glasses for these. My first Cinco de Mayo shift I swept up three broken ones before ten o’clock.
Prairie Fire is an ounce of tequila and a dash of Tabasco. That’s the recipe. The hot sauce sinks, so the first sip is clean and the last one bites. People showing off add more dashes. Let them.
The Barber Chair Shot is an ounce of Jose Cuervo gold with an ounce of strawberry margarita mix. A strawberry margarita minus the blender. Shake it over ice if there’s a tin around.
The Death Shot puts tequila on top of black sambuca. Opal Nera goes in first, then the tequila slowly over the back of a spoon. Black on the bottom, clear on top. That spoon trick gets its own walkthrough in our layered shots guide.
No spirit, just two liqueurs
Some of the best ones skip the hard liquor entirely.
The Buttery Nipple is half a shot of butterscotch schnapps and half a shot of Baileys. I made more of these for bachelorette parties than every other shot combined. The Slippery Nipple trades the butterscotch for sambuca. Sambuca first, Baileys floated on top. Like those? The creamy shots roundup is your next stop.
Polar Bear is crème de cacao and peppermint schnapps, half and half. A peppermint patty you can drink. I sold it mostly in December.
Whiskey
Crown Royal and amaretto, an ounce each, make the Red Royal Shot. It goes down way too easy. The Washington Apple Shot #2 is half Jack Daniel’s and half sour apple pucker. The usual Washington Apple adds cranberry. This one doesn’t bother, and I never heard a complaint.
Last one. The Jager Bomb: a shot of Jägermeister dropped into half a can of Red Bull. Two ingredients. You knew it was coming.
